The cost of owning a barcode printer

Barcode printers work out far more economically efficient than other types of print technologies. The printheads and other components used for the barcode printers are very specifically designed for printing barcodes, rather than general purpose. This means that when printing barcode labels, there will not be excessive wear on the equipment that may be true of other technologies.

When you use a generic printer for printing barcodes, you’ll likely spend time and money replacing parts, having to set up new printers, dealing with label jams, and of course, swopping the paper with the labels each time you want to switch from printing reports/documents to a label print job. The whole experience burns time and money, and reduces you or your workforce’s productivity.

Other costs are incurred from dirt, dust, moisture and vibration that result in necessary repairs or replacement. These are not found as much in industrial barcode printer solutions which are built to withstand such environmental pressures.

A dedicated barcode printer is further designed to accept a wide variety of media unlike other technologies, such as polyester and other durable stocks. Again, trying to use such media in generic printers can lead to jams, repair or replacement.

A further cost saving is found from using the printer to create asset identification and other permanent labels on demand. This totally elimates the requirement to buy sheets of labels or pre printed labels that are needed for most document printers.

Not so much a cost saving, but when you use the wrong technology and the resulting barcode is damaged, unreadable or falls off, you will find yourself with many returns as your products are no good for the shop shelf/checkout/store inventory system.

Overall, choosing the right barcode printer means you have a system that runs reliably and can produce barcodes and labels without special handling. The solution pays for itself through significant cost-savings, increase in productivity and reduction in customer returns/refunds.
